Jamaican singer-songwriter, Etana (an African word meaning Strong One), has had a whirlwind of a year performing with the Marley family and Bunny Wailer and turned in a powerful set at July’s Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest. Additionally she performed in last weekend’s Curefest, an event celebrating the release of popular reggae artist Jah Cure from eight years in prison.
Born in August Town, Jamaica, the home base of Reggae icon Sizzla, Etana moved to Miami, FL at the age of 9. Etana tried to succeed in the music business as a member of the all girl pop group Gift but claims, “It was a little too sexy for me.”
It wasn’t until Etana returned to Jamaica to launch an internet cafe with a friend that her career took off. By chance she scored an audition with Fifth Element Records, the production company behind roots reggae star Richie Spice and Chuck Fender. Impressed by her talent she was offered a job on the spot as backing vocalist for Spice’s next tour. After months of touring Etana emerged from the background and began performing on her own. Her management is currently looking at offers for her recently completed debut, The Strong One.
