Grace After Midnight is Felicia “Snoop” Pearson’s amazing life story penned with the help of David Ritz. Born a 3 pound, cross eyed crack baby Pearson was so tiny at birth that she had to be fed with an eyedropper. In her memoir she describes how she grew up on the mean streets in East Baltimore raised by foster parents because her mom and dad were both incarcerated and addicted to crack. She started selling drugs at 10 and at 14 was locked up for more than seven years after shooting a woman in self defense.
Through all this Pearson somehow persevered and is currently best known as the character named after herself on HBO’s The Wire, a character who Steven King declared “…the most terrifying villain to ever appear in a television series.” The role she plays isn’t a stretch from the former life she led.
After being released from prison Pearson made every attempt to be a law abiding citizen, but after two employers discovered that she had a record they had to let her go even though she had outstanding reviews from her supervisors. She took it back to the streets to set up shop moving packages, doing what she thought she knew best giving up on having a “normal” life. At a local nightclub she met Michael K. Williams, who plays Omar, a gay outlaw who jacks drug dealers for their drugs, guns and money on The Wire. Williams came up to Pearson and said, “You act or rap?”
“No n**a I hit the block”, said Pearson.
“Well, come down to the set of The Wire. There some folks you should meet.”
After a meeting with The Wire producers, Pearson was hired to play a hit man for Marlow’s crew, even though she didn’t have acting experience. “She just blew me away,” Williams told The New York Times” “There was just this beauty in her. When I looked in her eyes, I saw all this pain, but she still smiled and lit up the room.”
Pearson is adamant that she has put her troubles behind her and that she is a changed person. Pearson told The New York Times that she hoped to be an inspiration for others. “I still can’t believe it, because I come from the gutter,” she said. “I hope and pray that someone reads my story, or hears me talk about my story and will be, like, “She did it, I will see what my chances are.”
