LOS ANGELES — It was about time for Will Smith to be recognized and honored as one of the the movie legends who will always be remembered not only by their talent but also by the imprint of their hands and feet outside the famous Hollywood landmark.
The 39-year-old super star who started as a hip hop artist, has shown in his early age incredible acting skills in “The Fresh Price” comedy sitcom. Since then, Smith keeps climbing up. A string of hits — including “Bad Boys,” “Independence Day” and “Men in Black” — have made him one of the most bankable stars in Hollywood.
This time he made Big steps on top of the famous Hollywood landmark on Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Monday. As reporters said the star of “The Pursuit of Happyness” was close to being overcome by emotion after a ceremony before an audience of family and friends that included fellow actor Tom Cruise. Smith becomes the 195th celebrity to receive such an honor. He follows in the footsteps of movie icons Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington and Eddie Murphy.
In sealing the deal, Smith wrote “Change the World” in his famous square that now all the world can see. “Being etched into Hollywood is an honor,” he said. “I’ve seen this on television but was shocked by the emotions that came over me. It’s bigger than what I can fit into my head.” Smith’s new movie, “I Am Legend” opens in theatres this weekend. Catch our one-on-one interview with Will Smith next week.
“I’m humble, I’m honored, my heart is just beating right now,” said Smith. “I don’t really understand it — I’m not used to feeling like that … There’s something in the concrete about being etched into the fibre of Hollywood.”
The ceremony comes just before the release of his new film “I Am Legend,” in which he plays a scientist who is the last man on Earth following a virus that destroys the world’s population.
Smith, a two-time best actor Oscar nominee, said he is confident his new film would be a hit.
“This one is special,” Smith told KCAL9 television following the ceremony. “We made a really aggressive attempt at a different type of movie, so I’m anxious to see how people respond to it.”
