Barack Obama, a lawyer, a professor, a father, a Christian and above all a student of history and human nature, is a legitimate contender for the 2008 Presidency. He has written two books, “Dreams From My Father” and “The Audacity of Hope“, both becoming #1 on the New York Times bestseller list.
The most recent, “The Audacity of Hope”, is a book about transforming power. Obama suggests that Americans can repair a political process that is broken and that they will be able to restore to working order a government that has fallen dangerously out of touch with millions of ordinary Americans. Obama has many people believing there is still hope for American politics.
Obama, the product of a Kenyan father and white mother, grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia. He is currently the only African American in the senate and just the third elected since Reconstruction, which was the attempt from 1865 to 1877 in U.S. history to resolve the issues of the American Civil War.
This is where Obama stands on the following topics today:
- Iraq: Wants most troops out by 3/08, but keep a residual force.
- School Vouchers: Opposed-favors fully funding public schools.
- Healthcare: Would repeal Bush’s tax cuts to lower healthcare costs.
- Economy/Jobs: Favors tax relief for working families.
- Mandatory Minimums For Drug Offenders: It should be left up to the state.
- Hip-hop: “Rap is reflective of the culture of the inner city, with its problems, but also its potential, its energy, its challenges to the status quo. I absolutely agree my priority as a U.S. senator is dealing with poverty and educational opportunity and adequate health care. If I’m ignoring those issues and spending all my time worrying about rap lyrics, then I’m wasting my time.”
- Being Black: “There’s this assumption that there’s only one way of being black. That if you are not conforming to a certain pattern of behavior, that somehow you may not be authentic enough. Those of us in African-American culture know that there’s as much diversity in the African-American community as there is in any other community.”
Obama, along with Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and potentially Al Gore, will vie for the party’s nomination which will be made at the democratic National Convention in October 2008. While he has less experience than his rival candidates the rookie could emerge as the Democratic choice to lead the United State of America.
