NYCxDesign is a Shapeways hometown design event, a truly can’t-miss experience. This year Shapeways celebrated all things design by hosting several special design-themed events. The community team invited aspiring 3D designers into our digital manufacturing facility in Long Island City, Queens for a tour and discussion of the effects of on-demand production for designers getting their start.

In Brooklyn ShapewaysEDU sponsored the 6th annual WantedDesign Student Design Workshop, hosted by Pratt and Core77. Five teams of four students from Pratt, Aalto University in Helsinki, Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, ENSCI les Atelier in Paris, and Centro in Mexico City joined forces over 5 days to develop, design, and fabricate HyperHybrid products using 3D printed nylon, industrial felt, and wood. The results were impressive:
In Manhattan in the WantedDesign Terminal Stores, Shapeways community members were showing off beautiful, cutting-edge homeware designs by taking advantage of just about every material family available to them. Alessi showed never-produced product lines from their vault in strong and flexible Nylon. Queens-based design duo Durodeco explored cast metals, steel and ceramics for their line and designer Colin Wiencek used custom printed steel connecters to fabricate his elegant geodesic lighting fixtures with embedded LEDs.
